Web Home Page: The 548 km Liwonde National Park is situated on the eastern plain of the Upper Shire Valley, with the river itself as one of its major features. Lake Malcombe, which is fed and drained by the Shire, lies at its north-western boundary. The park has a wide variety of habitats, ranging from riverine swamps, through grasslands to extensive areas of mopane woodland on the higher ground. Elephant, sable, kudu, waterbuck, bushbuck, impala and the occasional lion inhabit Liwonde, and hippopotamus and crocodile live in the Shire River. Game-viewing is most productive between August and November. The park supports more than 3000 bird species, including Malawi's only population of Lilian's lovebird. Location: Southern Malawi; north of Blantyre. Access: From Blantyre take the M3 road northwards via Zomba to Liwonde; turn right onto the S131 and drive a further 6 km to the park's entrance gate. The access road is closed during the rainy season, from late November to early April, but the park and camp can be visited by boat from Liwonde Barrage at this time. Accommodation: Mvuu Camp has 8 2-bed and 2 4-bed rondavels with communal kitchen and ablution facilities; visitors should bring their own cooking and eating utensils and bedding. There is also a campsite. Water is fetched from the river nearby. Other facilities: A 97 km network of gravel game-viewing roads; picnic sites; boating permitted; a 15-seater boat may be hired. The nearest fuel and food supplies are at the village of Liwonde. Open: Throughout the year. Beware: Malaria; bilharzia; be ware of potentially dangerous game species.
